Recently, I shared a coffee with a long-time friend who, like many of us, faced the daunting task of returning to the office post-COVID.
Between sips, she confided, “It’s like learning to ride a bike again, but the bike has changed, and so have I.” This analogy struck me deeply. It wasn’t just about the return; it was about re-navigating our entire work-life balance with a new set of wheels. 🚲

As working women, especially moms, we’ve had to become chameleons, adapting to remote work while managing a household, and now, transitioning back to office life poses its own unique set of challenges.
The statistics are telling – the average employee spends about 3.5 hours per week on personal tasks during work hours. The loss of flexibility to toggle between work and home tasks ranks as the second most challenging aspect of returning to the office.
This shift impacts not just our work productivity but also our well-being, contributing to an annual cost of $300 billion to U.S. businesses due to employee stress.

Here’s five detailed tips, inspired by conversations with many of you, on how we can smooth the transition back to the office. These strategies are about empowering us to find balance and joy in this new chapter:
- Advocate for Yourself
- Accept Help With Open Arms
- Embrace Productivity Tools and Hacks
- Prioritize and Delegate Wisely
- Find Joy in Being Back
- My Panda’s Role in Your Journey
1. Advocate for Yourself 📣

The first step is to embrace open communication with your employer. If you need flexible hours to drop off your children at school, or if you require certain tools to enhance your productivity, speak up.
Remember, it’s not just about accommodation; it’s about creating an environment where you can thrive.
Also, is the hybrid work model a possibility? See if your employer is willing to explore hybrid work to retain some of that at-home flexibility. I’ve found that on the days I work from home I’m significantly less stressed. Not only that, but and the quality of my work is often much better as well.
Whether it’s flexible hours or specific resources, your advocacy can lead to adjustments that benefit you and your colleagues.
2. Accept Help With Open Arms 🤲

Asking for help is a sign of strength, not a weakness! Create a support network where tasks can be shared or delegated. Remember, it takes a village, and there’s strength in seeking assistance.
As humans, we are meant to live in community and we have always traditionally had social support systems around us. Yet, these days we live far from our extended families and it’s difficult to muster the courage to ask for help from others. It’s important to realize that we are not failing if we need help, we are simply human.
As a single mom, I have had to really surrender and accept that asking for help will be the only way I will be able to do it all.
A couple of things that have made all the difference for me include carpooling with other parents to sports practices and games. I’ve also leveraged meal services like Cookonnect to help alleviate the daily stress of cooking.
3. Embrace Productivity Tools and Hacks ⏱

In our quest to juggle multiple balls, efficiency becomes our best friend. Whether it’s using digital tools to manage your tasks or adopting the Pomodoro Technique to break your work into focused intervals, find what hacks work best for you.
Even simple changes, like organizing your email inbox or planning your week ahead on Sunday, can reclaim valuable time and reduce stress. Every Sunday evening I will do a brain dump to get all the things I have to do that week out of my head and onto a piece of paper so I can take action.
4. Prioritize and Delegate Wisely 🗂

Learning to say no is as important as taking on tasks. Prioritize your responsibilities based on urgency and significance and remember that delegating is important to do both at work and at home. It is common to have an assistant or teammate at work who will help you get through your tasks, it is just as important to have someone at home help you with your personal tasks.
Use tools like Trello or Asana to visualize your tasks and delegate what you can. Remember, every task you delegate is an opportunity for someone else to grow and for you to focus on what matters most.
The easiest way to get more than 24 hours in your day is to leverage the time of others. If you are able to identify 1 -2 hours of tasks to get off of your list and onto someone else’s, you will magically have 26 hours in your day. For me, passing my laundry folding off to an assistant from My Panda is an absolute lifesaver!
5. Find Joy in Being Back in the Office

Despite its challenges, returning to the office brings opportunities for personal growth and renewed connections with colleagues.
Celebrate small wins, enjoy the camaraderie, and take pride in your contributions! Re-engage with the office culture by participating in or organizing team events.
These moments of connection can make all the difference in how we perceive our workday, and these aspects of office life can offer a sense of fulfillment and motivation.
